Fall 2001

An editorial by R. Ronald Sokol, CSP, General Manager, CSC/TC

October/November- 2001 Contractors Safety council of Texas City (CSC/TC) Update...

Please excuse our absence of a printed newsletter since the end of summer. We will transition to a printed newsletter every other month but have committed to updating our web site at least monthly or more often as the need arises.

For those of you who have not discovered us on the web, we can be found at: www.csctc.org. Our site includes links for On-line registration through ISNetWorld, location maps/directions to CSC/TC, Basic Plus curriculum, study guide, practice exam, fees/schedule, and reciprocity information to name just a few topics on the web site. This month, you will also see a registration link to an upcoming seminar on the new OSHA Recordkeeping Standard and the new Steel Erection Standard which go into effect in January, 2002. This seminar is scheduled for December 4, 2001. The cost is FREE. The OSHA Recordkeeping session will be from 8:00 a.m.- 11:30 a.m. and the Steel Erection session will be from 1:00 p.m.- 4:00 p.m. Both sessions will be conducted by OSHA Representatives. We are limited by space to about 80 attendees, so register early to guarantee a space.

We are gearing up for the upcoming turnaround season which will be upon us before we know it. Our heaviest volume of training traditionally begins in January and runs through March. Both BP and Valero Refining have informed us that this will be a busy turnaround season. In anticipation, we have increased the size of our Computer Based Training (CBT) Lab from 50 to 75 units and plan on installing a second badging station to process the additional contract employees. Our Board of Directors have approved an upgrade to our badging process as we will be going to a hard plastic card from the paper laminated card currently issued by CSC/TC. We hope to have this badge conversion project up and running by year end. We also plan on using the "Common Card" currently being utilized by Safety Councils in Baton Rouge, Houston, Nederland, and Port Lavaca. This will be in conjunction with the offering of our User's Site Specific programs at various Safety Councils. We are currently working with the Houston Safety Council and the Nederland Safety Council to make this happen by year end. In addition, we will be able to offer additional Site Specific programs from Various Owners at CSC/TC. The first additional programs we will concentrate on will be Equistar Chocolate Bayou and Dow Chemical-Freeport. Once this system is in place, contractors can utilized the Safety Councils most convenient to them for our User's site programs, receive the "Common Badge" and proceed directly to the User's facility. There will be an additional charge for this convenience, but the potential time savings for some contractors will greatly outweigh the proposed additional fees of $20 per Site program compared to our current member fee of $5 per Site program. You must be an active member of CSC/TC to utilize this benefit. It is our stated goal to have this completed process implemented by year end. As you can see, we have been busy improving our organization to serve your needs. In addition, the Basic Plus and Basic Plus Refresher Programs are being updated and improved by the Association of Reciprocal Safety Councils (ARSC) and should be offered by CSC/TC beginning in January, 2002.

A lot has happened since we last spoke and there is a lot more in front of us. If there is anything we can assist you with, please let us know and we will try our best to treat you right!

Sincerely, R. Ronald Sokol,
C.S.P. General Manager
